Going Home

Every gift can change a life. Recently, we were able to take in our patient Roxanne Raynes, who was living with COPD, alone and homeless. Raynes received care for several weeks at one of our Suncoast Hospice Care Centers, a nurse fostered Raynes’ two cats, Hobbs and Myrrh, and the cats and Raynes all flew back to her home state Maine to live with a cousin she called her niece.

“They’re helping me get my babies home, they’re my fur babies. I don’t have any close family. I don’t have anybody. I’m going to be staying with her (niece) and she’s going to help me transition into hopefully a place of my own. I think it will be good for both of us. We’ve always been close,” Raynes shared with our staff in an interview.

Raynes came to Suncoast Hospice upon the recommendation of her doctors during a hospitalization for her advanced illness. She found lots of comfort and support at our care center.

“They’ve done so well trying to get all my needs (met). They’re taking care of the meds and got it set up so I can get hooked in to the hospice up there. They’ve got a bed and a concentrator for my oxygen ready and the nurses will be coming to take care of me,” she said.

Grateful for all of our help, she added, “You can’t ask for better people. It’s amazing what they can do for you. They can handle so many different aspects of everything. I can’t thank hospice enough for everything they’ve done. It does make you realize that there are still decent people out there.”
