Our celebration of volunteers continues as we introduce our second pair of 2020 Volunteer of the Year recipients and applaud their extraordinary service.
Nero Jones – Organizational Support Volunteer
Office – Welcome Center
Jones began volunteering with Empath Health seven years ago as way to give back for the support he and his family received when his wife was under the care of Suncoast Hospice. At the Welcome Desk of the Clearwater Service Center, he is the first point of contact for all who walk through the door. His sharp professional attire and warm personality give the best first impression to guests. While Jones’ main role is at the desk, he also assists Bereavement, Purchasing, Foundation, Copy Center and the Veterans program with special projects while at the desk. It takes a special person to greet and welcome people during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Jones has a true gift for making guests feel at ease and comfortable.
Colleen Martin – Outstanding Young Leader Award
Teen Volunteer – Patient and Family Support and North Pinellas Care Center
Martin began volunteering with Empath Health during her freshman year of high school. Her primary focus is on visiting with patients and families, volunteering at the North Pinellas Care Center and serving on the North County Teen Leadership Board. As an active participant with the Cheer Team, Party Pals and Lifetime Legacies, she has made more than 175 visits to hospice patients and their families, providing opportunities for socialization and life review.
Martin shared, “My experience with Empath Health has taught me that bringing joy to another person can only bring joy in return. It has allowed me to be more comfortable and compassionate in connecting with people, as I never stop learning about the universality of the human condition.”
She is also this year’s recipient of the Cassidy, Cloe, Berkley Wilder Hospice Teen Scholarship Award. A senior at Palm Harbor University High School, she is enrolled in the academically challenging International Baccalaureate Program. Martin plans to major in biochemistry with a goal of a career in genetic and biochemical research.
