Congratulations to our February Impact award winner, Cathy Lasky, creative services producer for Empath Health.
Lasky has been with the organization for 26 years. In her role, she supports the mission through visual storytelling with photography, videography and graphic design. Lasky’s background is in fine art and she has experience providing art therapy for both children and adults. She uses these skills as a volunteer supporting an Empath Health pediatric patient.
“I love storytelling through video and photos. We have a wonderful story to tell.” says Lasky. “The patients and families I have the honor to work with are quite remarkable.”
The monthly Impact Award recognizes staff for their positive impact on others, demonstration of our values and above-and-beyond service.
Here is an excerpt from Lasky’s nomination:
The pediatric program has a patient who is only able to move part of one thumb. This patient completes all of her school work on her computer and in her spare time, started to create art on her computer. I received a request for a volunteer who is artistic to visit the patient and provide art lessons on the computer. Not having a volunteer available and knowing that Cathy is a graphic artist who has helped at several pediatric special events, I reached out to her and asked if she would be willing to visit to provide art lessons and support to this child.
Cathy has helped this child grow tremendously in her expression through art. The pictures this child is creating on her computer with just a part of her thumb are amazing. As wonderful as Cathy’s gift to this child is and has been, she went above and beyond to help this child.
Cathy called the patient’s mother to confirm an upcoming scheduled visit only be told by the mother that the patient’s computer started smoking and quit working earlier in the week. Cathy documented that the mother “sounded quite concerned because the patient had all of her school work and art work on the computer.” Cathy went into action to connect the family to resources to ensure the computer was back up and running in a timely manner.
The computer and track pad are this patient’s lifeline. It is how she completes her school work, how she creates her artwork and how her world is open for her.
Cathy, through her connections and knowledge, kept this patient’s lifeline open when it could have been incredibly diminished.
