What would it look like if we imagined Joy and Sorrow as guests in our home? Sorrow usually walks right in, uninvited, demanding all of our attention. Meanwhile, Joy stands outside, quietly and politely knocking, waiting to be welcomed in.
Sometimes, we have this mistaken impression that to truly be a good host to Sorrow, we can’t open the door to other guests. Sometimes, Sorrow’s lamentations drown out Joy’s quiet knocks on the door. When we are able to welcome both Joy and Sorrow, however, we find that both guests fill our home with depth and wisdom; and that it is perfectly natural for them to be in the same room together.
May we never neglect to open the door to Joy.
Have a great week, everyone!
Jim
