Today we honor and remember the life and work of the visionary leader and social activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King exemplified the criteria that he, himself identified for a truly educated person – “intelligence plus character”. His brilliant mind and unwavering commitment to racial justice produced speeches and letters filled with deep insight and penetrating wisdom that continue to speak to the ongoing challenges we face in our country and our world over fifty years after his assassination. One such letter was penned while enduring harsh conditions in a jail in Birmingham where he wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
In 2021, may we truly begin to recognize our interconnectedness and strive to create a world of equity and justice.
