On June 3, 2017, Alex Honnold scaled the iconic nearly 3,000 foot granite wall known as El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without so much as a rope or carabineer or harness.

For nearly four hours, he climbed knowing that one slightly misplace foothold would result in him plummeting to his death. It is thought to be one of the greatest athletic achievements of all time.

Perhaps even more amazing to me than the physical aspect of the endeavor is the unwavering mental focus that was required in the face of extremely frightening circumstances. It is a testament to what is attainable through disciplined effort.

Whatever mountain we are trying to climb in our own lives, if we ever get discouraged and feel like it’s just can’t be done, we can take a look at this picture and know that with determined effort, unimaginably great things are possible.
