March is National Crochet Month. We are honored to be part of the fabric of a community that shares their hearts and skills making creations for our patients.
A special thanks goes out to a group of ladies from Transfiguration Manor. The women have attended our monthly Senior Chats meetings and found inspiration to make hats and a blanket for our patients.
“This building has 80% Spanish-speaking residents and we have grown very close. We do arts and crafts or bingo while discussing different topics, such as advance care planning, writing your legacy and care for the caregiver. In November we discussed Suncoast Hospice care for National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. In December the group surprised me with a bag full of hats that they exclusively handmade for our pediatric patients. Each lady also crocheted a square of a blanket for an adult patient. It was a beautiful gesture,” shared Maria Pepe, Empath Health Spanish community partnership specialist.
Diana Gonzalez, services coordinator for Transfiguration Manor, added how the spirit of the project grew to impact even more people in need.
“We started the arts and crafts class with Maria. One of the ladies had yarn because she used to do sewing and knitting, and gave it to me. All of them wanted to do something with it. I said that Christmas was coming and many people are homeless. All of the material wasn’t enough, so the ladies bought their own yarn, and they are low-income. They did scarves and hats and we donated them to the Salvation Army to give to the homeless. Maria shared about Empath and the kids in care. The ladies were so happy to make the hats and the blanket because some of them have had experiences with loved ones in Empath care. I was very proud of them,” Gonzalez said.
