If we hope to achieve some level of mutual understanding and shared sense of destiny, we must on a fundamental level, challenge the illusion of our separateness and embrace the fact that our fates and our fortunes are inextricably intertwined.  Here is how Trappist Monk Thomas Merton describes this truth,

“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.”  If we truly recognized this, it would radically change our perspective, our priorities, our ethics, and our behavior.

May all of the decisions we make be informed by a compassion which emerges out of a recognition of our interconnectedness.

Have a great week, everyone!
