I was visiting an 89-year-old man once, sitting on his back porch having a glass of iced tea. He was quiet for several moments looking out over the canal that wound behind his property. Finally, he looked over at me with a sad smile and said, “Where has the time gone?” Fortunately, he was someone who had put his time to good use. Memories of family and friends and community involvement filled his photo albums and his soul. It made me think of a couple of lines from Ralph Waldo Emerson.

“Guard well your spare moments.

They are like uncut diamonds.

Discard them and their value will never be known.

Improve them and they will become

The brightest gems in a useful life.”

This week, let’s not take a single day for granted.  Let’s recognize and appreciate the inestimable value of each of our moments and put them all to good use so that we, too, will one day look back and smile.

Have a great week, everyone!
