October 4 is World Animal Day celebrating animals of all kinds around the planet. Today, we also wish to give special appreciation to the animals serving in our pet visit volunteer program.
Bella is a petite and spunky Chihuahua who was rescued by the loving Tedesco family. At nine years old and a mere six and a half pounds, she adores mealtimes, naps and nature. She frequently hangs out with the family’s other rescue Chihuahua named Taco.
“She’s inseparable from Taco,” said her owner, Frank Tedesco, a 15-year volunteer with Suncoast Hospice.
Chihuahuas are generally known to be loyal, energetic and friendly. Bella and Tedesco are specially trained to visit with our Suncoast Hospice patients and families. Her fun nature and presence uplift those she meets.
“She is just so good with patients,” Tedesco shared.
In addition to teaming with Bella, Tedesco provides spiritual support to our patients and education to the community as a Buddhist chaplain.
“I’m on call when they need me,” he said.
Tedesco particularly is fascinated by the Indian culture. He recently embarked on a grant-funded project to interview people of India about their traditions and the meaning of life and death.
